Removal & Haul-Away

Concrete Demolition

Looking to remove old or unwanted concrete from your property? We handle driveways, pool decks, patios, steps, walkways and slabs. Removal is generally the first stage of a project rather than the whole of it.

Concrete removal is a larger job than it appears, and breaking the slab is not the majority of it. Old flatwork has to come out in liftable sections without damaging what remains: the foundation it abuts, the irrigation routed beneath it.

The material then has to leave the site. A cubic yard weighs a little over two tons, so a modest driveway represents a truck and a half of material, and site access determines the duration far more than the concrete does.

Concrete demolition and removal in Sacramento

CA Pro Concrete removes driveways, patios, walkways, pool decks, slabs, steps, footings and foundations, either as a standalone service or as the first stage of a replacement. Breaking a slab up is the smaller part of the work. Removing the material from the site, loading it and disposing of it legally accounts for most of the time and most of the cost.

Method is determined by the slab and by site access. Smaller slabs are broken out with a hydraulic breaker and larger or reinforced work with an excavator-mounted breaker, and whether a machine can reach the area determines which is available. Both are assessed on site before the work is quoted.

The Work

What is included in a concrete removal

Three stages. The second accounts for the majority of the cost, and it is the line most frequently omitted from a low quote.

  • Saw cutting and break-out

Where a section of a slab is being removed, the line is saw cut first so the remaining concrete retains a clean straight edge, then the material is broken out with a hydraulic breaker or machine.

  • Loading and haul-away

Broken concrete is loaded and hauled off site. This accounts for the majority of the labor and the majority of the cost on a removal job.

  • Legal disposal and site clearance

Material is disposed of legally and taken to a recycling facility wherever the load permits. The site is left graded and clear rather than rutted and covered in debris.

Why CA Pro Concrete

Why choose CA Pro Concrete for demolition

Haul-away included
Removal includes taking the material off site. Broken concrete is not stacked beside the property for the owner to arrange disposal separately.
Access assessed first
Whether a machine can reach the slab determines both the method and the price. This is established at the estimate rather than on the morning of the job.
Continuous with the replacement
Where demolition is the first stage of a new pour, the same crew continues directly into it and the site does not stand open between contractors.
CSLB License #1024813
Licensed with the Contractors State License Board and fully insured, which is worth verifying on any work involving machinery adjacent to a structure.
Questions

Concrete demolition questions

If your question is not answered here, contact CA Pro Concrete directly. We assess every job on site and provide a written estimate at no charge.

  • How much does concrete removal cost in Sacramento?

Removal is priced on volume and access rather than on area. Thickness is significant, as a six-inch reinforced slab represents more than twice the work of a four-inch one, and access is the largest factor: a driveway a machine can reach and a back patio requiring material to be barrowed through a side gate differ substantially at the same area.

Disposal is a real cost and belongs in the quote. Where a price appears unusually low, disposal is generally the omitted item. Our estimates include haul-away and legal disposal.

  • How is concrete demolished?

For most residential slabs the method is a hydraulic breaker, either handheld or mounted on an excavator, reducing the slab to sections small enough to lift. Where part of a slab is being removed, the line is saw cut first so that the remaining concrete retains a clean straight edge.

Thicker or larger-scale work requires heavier equipment. Reinforced concrete must be cut free of its rebar as it is broken out, which is slower than unreinforced slab. Method follows the concrete and the site access, and both are assessed before work begins.

  • Should concrete be removed by a contractor or as a DIY project?

Breaking out a small, thin, unreinforced slab with a rented breaker is within the scope of a competent DIY project. The stage most frequently underestimated is disposal: one square yard of four-inch concrete weighs approximately half a ton, and all of it must be lifted, loaded, transported and disposed of at a licensed facility.

Buried services are the other consideration. Irrigation lines, gas, electrical runs to a garage or shed and pool plumbing are commonly routed beneath flatwork. Work that is reinforced, thick, adjacent to a structure or adjacent to a pool should be carried out by a licensed and insured contractor with the appropriate equipment.

  • Is haul-away and disposal included?

Yes. Loading, haulage and legal disposal are included in every removal we carry out and are itemized in the written quote rather than added afterward. Concrete is taken to a recycling facility wherever the load permits, where it is crushed and reused as base material.

The site is left graded and clear. Where a new pour is to follow, the ground is left prepared for it. See digging and grading for the stage that follows.

  • Can part of a slab be removed rather than all of it?

Yes. Partial removal is a routine request: a single cracked panel from a walkway, the section of driveway a root has lifted, or one half of a patio being reconfigured. The line is saw cut to full depth first, so the remaining slab has a clean edge to pour against and the break does not propagate into it.

Cutting at an existing joint is generally the preferred option where one is suitably positioned. The cut line is confirmed with you before work begins.
