What is the best concrete finish for a pool deck?
For most Sacramento properties the appropriate choice is a textured finish rather than a smooth one: a broom finish, a salt finish, a light knockdown, or exposed aggregate. Each retains traction when the surface is wet, which is the governing requirement on a deck used barefoot.
Smooth troweled finishes and heavily sealed surfaces should be approached with caution, as both become slick when wet. A comparable appearance can generally be achieved with a textured finish and an appropriate color.
Can concrete around a pool be stained or colored?
Yes, by two methods. Integral color is mixed into the concrete before placement, so the color runs through the full depth of the slab and cannot wear off high points. Stain is applied to a cured surface and produces a more varied, mottled result with a wider range of available shades.
On an existing deck, stain is normally the only option. On a new pour either method is available, and integral color performs better over time on a surface exposed to sun and pool chemicals throughout the season.
Why does a pool deck get hot, and what reduces it?
Dark colors absorb more solar radiation, and dense, smooth surfaces retain that heat and transfer it back underfoot. A dark deck in full sun during a Sacramento July can reach temperatures that make the surface unusable in the afternoon.
Lighter colors produce the largest improvement. A textured finish also helps, as less of the foot contacts the surface at any one time. Both are decisions made before the pour and cannot be changed afterward.
Can an existing pool deck be resurfaced instead of replaced?
In many cases, yes. Where the slab is structurally sound, remains flat and has only worn on the surface, an overlay provides a new finish and color with significantly less disruption than removing concrete from around a full pool.
Where the deck has settled, moves underfoot, or shows cracks with vertical displacement, the ground beneath has shifted and a new surface will crack in the same locations. Concrete repair covers the assessment and the options between the two.
How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Sacramento?
