Ground reshaping and land modification, so the site is level, draining and ready before a single yard of concrete is ordered. It is the half of the project that disappears beneath the slab.
Nearly every concrete job begins with moving dirt, and the standard of that work sets the ceiling on everything poured afterward. Ground cut to depth and compacted in lifts is what a slab actually bears on.
Grading determines where water goes for the next thirty years. A finished surface requires a consistent fall away from the building, and that fall is established in the dirt long before concrete is specified.
Excavation, grading and site prep in Sacramento

The majority of concrete failures we are called to assess originate as grading faults: ground not excavated to depth, fill placed without compaction, or a surface graded so that water runs beneath the slab rather than off it. None of this is visible once the concrete is placed, and correcting it afterward costs considerably more than getting it right at the outset.
What is included in excavation and grading
Three stages. The second is the one most frequently omitted, because it is covered by the stage that follows it.
Excavation
Footings, foundations, pads and trenches excavated to line and depth, with spoil either reused on site where suitable or hauled away where it is not.
Cut, fill and compaction
Ground brought to grade and compacted in layers, with imported base material where the existing soil will not carry the load. Compaction is the stage everything placed above it depends on.
Finish grading
The final surface shaped to the falls the site requires, so that water is carried away from the structure and the slab rather than collecting against either.

How much does excavation and grading cost in Sacramento?
Volume and access determine the price: the quantity of soil moved, whether it can remain on site or must be hauled off, whether base material has to be imported, and whether a machine can reach the working area. A back yard a skid steer can enter and one accessed through a three-foot gate differ substantially at the same area.
Soil conditions are the other factor. Hardpan, rock and saturated ground all reduce production rates. We assess the site before quoting, and the estimate is free.
Why does grading matter before pouring concrete?
The ground carries the slab. Concrete is strong in compression and weak in bending, so a slab with a soft spot or a void beneath it will crack over that area. Excavating the subgrade to depth and compacting it evenly is what prevents this.
Drainage is the second consideration. A surface graded flat, or graded toward a structure, directs water beneath the slab, where it washes out fines and creates the voids that cause settlement. Both conditions are concealed once the concrete is placed. Concrete repair is largely the correction of these faults years later.
What is soil compaction, and why does it get skipped?
Compaction is the mechanical consolidation of soil or base material to remove air voids so that the ground can carry load without settling. It is carried out in layers, described as lifts, because equipment can only compact effectively to a limited depth per pass.
It is omitted because it is not visible in the finished work and it adds time to the program. Fill that was dumped, leveled and poured over is indistinguishable on pour day from fill placed and compacted in lifts. The difference becomes apparent several years later, beneath a slab.
Do you take on Bobcat and small excavation work on its own?
Yes. Site clearing, dirt moving, spreading base material, excavating footings and trenches, cutting pads and grading are all available as standalone services rather than only as part of one of our own pours.
Site access is the governing question. A skid steer requires a route in, and gate width, overhead clearance and gradient determine whether machine work or hand excavation is appropriate. Providing access details when you call generally allows us to answer immediately.
Do you provide site grading for commercial projects?
Yes. Building pads, parking and yard areas, drainage falls and finish grading for commercial sites are carried out alongside the residential side of the business. The principles are unchanged at larger scale: excavate to design, compact in lifts, and finish to the specified grades.
Commercial work normally proceeds against a grading plan and is subject to inspection, and we build to what is specified. Submitting the plans with your inquiry allows us to provide a more accurate figure.
