Not all damaged concrete requires replacement, and distinguishing between the two cases is the relevant expertise. A single cracked panel, a settled section or a spalled surface over sound concrete is a repair. Cracking in several directions is a slab at the end of its service life.
The indicator is generally underfoot rather than visual. Where the two sides of a crack sit at different heights, the ground has moved and the surface is not the fault. Where repair is appropriate, it costs a fraction of removal.

Cracks routed and filled, scaled and spalled surfaces patched, and edges and corners rebuilt. This work prevents water entering the slab and converting a surface defect into a structural one.
Resurfacing or replacement
An overlay where the substrate is sound, and full removal and replacement where it is not. Which applies is determined by the condition of the base, not by preference.

How much does concrete repair cost in Sacramento?
Substantially less than replacement. Leveling a settled section, filling cracks and grinding down a trip edge are small-scale jobs. Resurfacing falls between the two. Removal and replacement is the highest-cost option and is not recommended where the slab does not require it.

Should concrete be repaired or replaced?
The condition of the base determines the answer. Where the slab remains well supported and the damage is confined to the surface, repair or resurfacing is appropriate and will hold. Where the slab has settled, moves under load, or shows cracks with vertical displacement between the two sides, the ground beneath has shifted.
Any surface applied over a moving slab will crack in the same locations, generally within one to two years. At that point replacement becomes the lower-cost option over the service life of the work.
What is concrete leveling, and how long does it last?
Concrete leveling raises a settled slab back to grade by filling the void beneath it through small holes drilled in the surface and lifting under pressure. The existing slab is retained and the holes are patched.
The repair lasts as long as the cause of the settlement remains addressed. Where a slab settled because water was washing soil out from beneath it, correcting the drainage is part of completing the work properly rather than an additional service.
Can a cracked driveway or patio be resurfaced?
Where the slab is flat, sound and well supported, yes. An overlay bonds a new surface to the existing slab and can be finished plain, colored or stamped, which addresses appearance at the same time as condition.
Where the crack is moving, where sections sit at different heights, or where any part of the slab moves under load, the base has failed and resurfacing is a short-term measure at long-term cost. See concrete driveways for what a replacement involves.
Why is concrete cracking, sinking or flaking?
Cracking is generally a jointing issue. Concrete shrinks as it cures, and where control joints were cut too shallow, too late or spaced too far apart, the slab cracks at random. Sinking is a base issue: soil that was not adequately compacted, or water washing fines out from beneath the slab.
Surface flaking and pitting, described as scaling or spalling, is a finishing or water issue. Excess water worked into the surface during finishing leaves a weakened top layer that separates over time. All three conditions are repairable, and the appropriate repair depends on which is present.
